Another Indiana Jones Whip Heads to the Block
According to the Guardian (UK), the 12ft-long bullwhip used by Harrison Ford in the Raiders of the Lost Ark will go on sale later this month and is expected to fetch in excess of $81,000.
Personally, I am happy to see they acknowledge that numerous whips were made for each Indiana Jones film, begging the question of whether "a" whip is "the" whip.
In this case, you can bid with confidence, because this particular whip has great provenance, coming from the collection of special effects expert Kit West. "Originally there were six whips," West writes. "The one I'm giving you is the last one that is completely intact and in its original mint condition." The 12.5 ft-long "stunt whip" is thought to be the one used when Jones was dragged behind a military troop carrier, and is the only one from the film left intact.
Along with the whip and other memorabilia, the auction will include the fertility idol statue seen in the opening sequences of the 30-year old film, and is expected to fetch $32,000. Both items are going under the hammer at Bonhams in Los Angeles on 26 June.
